Words to live by in life for sure, but more importantly on a race track. Yesterday I did my first High Performance Driving Education for the Oregon PCA. Here is a quick word to everyone that thinks they can drive (but have never been on a race track at speed) - you can't. How do I know? I couldn't either. There is a big difference from highway driving (65 MPH, slow, steady turns) to the track (130 + MHP - harsh apex turns). If you don't know how to handle a car, if you don't know how to control the weight of a car, it's practically impossible. After 8 hours, I was starting to get it, I was starting to find the "line" and hit the apex cones, but I needed more time - much more time.
Although my instructor said I did a great job and that he never felt nervous, unlike 40% of his students, I know I needed to work on it more and focus more every step of the way. If you lose focus or second guess anything at speed, you can seriously hurt your car or yourself. After the event I started to think about focus in an entirely new light and how it compared to Cularis and its mission that we set out. In past endeavors, focus was something I think was missing and in hindsight I can see that it was lacking. With lessons learned I approached Cularis with the ultimate focus, bringing clients exactly what they need and the services that they require for their web site and store.
It looks like I will be gaining more insight from learning to actually "drive" a car and not just occupy it on the streets - and I think it will make more of what I do here in forming Cularis to be one of the best boutique e-commerce and web service shops around.
Stay tuned, I'll try to get some track times here so we can see just how good my focus can get.
